Which Firepaw family should you investigate?
The Phoenix family is a slatmill, the Dragon is a carpet mill, and Mini targets smaller dogs. Those names describe different starting points. Decide whether you are investigating a freely moving slat belt or a deliberately higher-resistance carpet mechanism before comparing colors and accessories. Does a Phoenix Gen 10 include a brake?
The January 2026 Phoenix Gen 10 FAQ identifies a wooden belt and plastic running wheels as standard, with plastic slats, silicone wheels and a disc brake offered as upgrades. It also says adding the brake later is more involved than changing the belt or wheels. Confirm the configuration on the written order; a photograph of a fully equipped machine does not establish what the base quotation includes.
Our buying judgment is to resolve handler control before cosmetic customization. Ask the supplier to demonstrate how the exact configured machine starts, slows and stops, where the handler operates it, and how those controls are checked. A feature that is optional in a sales configuration can still be important to the setup you intend to use.
Mini Gen 2 has a real specification discrepancy
The current Mini Gen 2 product page describes a 90 cm running length. Its main description gives approximately 43 cm at the withers, while a later feature list says approximately 40 cm. The older sizing page describes a Mini with a 70 cm running length and a 38 cm withers limit. These should not be merged into one supposedly verified size specification.
If your dog is near any of those thresholds, send measurements and ask Firepaw which generation and limits apply to the actual offer. Include chest width and the measurement landmarks used. Save the answer with the quote so an older demonstration video or seller listing cannot silently become the sizing evidence for a different generation.

Dragon is a different mechanism, not a smaller Phoenix
Firepaw’s Dragon Gen IV page presents a high-resistance carpet mechanism and changes to its adjustment and service access. It publishes a resistance figure without enough measurement context for us to use it as a cross-brand performance score. We also do not treat its joint-protection or rehabilitation language as evidence that the machine is appropriate for a particular medical condition.
Ask for the usable running length and width of the selected size separately from the assembled frame and shipping crate. Then request a demonstration of movement initiation with the final configuration. Pushing an empty belt by hand can help explain a mechanism, but it cannot prove how your dog will respond to it.
What should a complete quote contain?
A useful quote names the generation, size, belt material, wheel material, brake, display and any transport or mounting accessories. Request the exact care instructions and ask which parts can be replaced individually. For an international order, ask who handles delivery damage, what happens if a component arrives defective, and whether replacement-part shipping is included in the applicable terms.
Before paying, compare the delivery route with the assembled machine and package measurements: doorway width, steps, turns and final operating position all matter. Arrange the handler’s access and safe entry and exit as part of the room plan. Do not assume disassembly for transport makes a machine convenient to rebuild between every use.
